1. Summary
This
product bulletin announces the availability of Protection Manager, part of
the NetApp Manageability Family Data Suite, for First Customer Ship.
Protection
Manager is an intuitive
and innovative backup and replication management software for
NetApp disk-based data protection environments. Currently it supports and
provides a management interface for the SnapVault®, Open System
SnapVault, and SnapMirror® products. Protection Manager
delivers greater assurance of data protection and higher productivity by
providing policy-based management, including automated data protection setup.

What’s New
Protection Manager is a
new product. The key value propositions are:
- Protection Manager provides
greater assurance of data protection:
- Allows backup administrators
to automate complex backup and replication configuration tasks and
conform to data protection SLAs.
- Provides a simple dashboard
that shows comprehensive data protection information at a glance,
including unprotected data.
- Protection Manager provides
higher productivity:
- Workflow-driven
functionality makes the solution intuitive, extremely easy to learn and
easy to use.
- Automation plus monitoring
and management of all data protection operations can be done via a
central console, enabling higher productivity.
- Protection Manager provides
increased efficiency of secondary storage resources:
- Consolidates secondary and
tertiary storage assets into a logical resource pool with similar
characteristics that can be dynamically allocated.

Customers who are using the DFM
Business Continuance Option to monitor and manage SnapVault, Open System
SnapVault, or SnapMirror can get a 60% discount when they purchase Protection
Manager during Fiscal Q4 2007 and Fiscal Q1 2008. Use PVR 65895 in the
exception PVR field.

Product Information
Protection
Manager is licensed based on storage system tiers. Customers must purchase a
Protection Manager license for every SnapVault primary, SnapVault secondary
and SnapMirror system. If a customer
is running Open Systems SnapVault, only the destination systems (NetApp
storage system) need to be licensed.
Customers must also have Operations Manager licensed for every NetApp
storage system in the environment.

Customers
should purchase an SSP license for Protection Manager. This license entitles
them to NetApp customer support and also to future releases of Protection
Manager.
